🆕 What Actually Changed?

Separating fact from panic: here's what's genuinely new vs. what was already there

Data Type Before (Pre-2026) After (Jan 2026) Status
GPS Location Approximate only (IP/SIM) Precise GPS (with permission) NEW
AI Interactions Not explicitly mentioned All prompts, questions, files logged NEW
Immigration Status Listed since Aug 2024 Same language, more visible SAME
Gender Identity Listed since Aug 2024 Same language, more visible SAME
Biometric Data Faceprints & voiceprints Faceprints & voiceprints SAME
Off-Platform Ads Limited disclosure Can show ads outside TikTok CHANGED

⚠️ Important Context

Much of the "alarming" language users discovered (immigration status, gender identity, religious beliefs) was already in the policy since approximately August 2024. The January 2026 update made users notice it because they were forced to re-accept terms after the ownership change. However, the precise GPS location and AI interaction logging are genuinely new capabilities.

🛡️ Protect Your Privacy

Actions you can take to minimize data collection

1. Review & Adjust Privacy Settings

Steps:

  1. Go to Profile → Menu (☰) → Settings and privacy
  2. Navigate to Privacy → turn off "Suggest your account to others"
  3. Turn off "Personalized ads" under Ads settings
  4. Review "Download your data" to see what they have
2. Deny Location Permissions

The new precise GPS tracking is optional. On your phone:

  • iPhone: Settings → TikTok → Location → Never
  • Android: Settings → Apps → TikTok → Permissions → Location → Deny

TikTok will still get approximate location from your IP address, but not precise GPS.

3. Be Careful with AI Features

Every AI interaction is logged. Avoid asking TikTok's AI about:

  • Immigration or visa questions
  • Medical or health concerns
  • Legal matters
  • Financial information
  • Anything you wouldn't want stored
4. Limit What You Share in Content

TikTok analyzes everything in your videos, including:

  • Your face (biometric faceprint)
  • Your voice (voiceprint)
  • Background details (location clues)
  • Text in frame
  • Even drafts you never post!

Consider using filters or not showing your face if privacy is a concern.

5. Request Your Data & Consider Deletion

To download your data:

Settings → Privacy → Download your data → Request data

To delete your account:

Settings → Manage account → Delete account

Note: Some data may be retained per legal requirements even after deletion.

Take Control of Your Data

Understanding is the first step. Now take action.
